We are excited to continue the PTA sponsored reading incentive program BATTLE OF THE BOOKS (BOB). America’s Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3rd-6th. The purpose of this program is to help children find the joy of reading while exploring a variety of books they may not ordinarily gravitate towards. Students are given a list of 20 books to read throughout the year. They are encouraged to work with their peers to read all 20 books to be prepared to “Battle” with other teams. Each classroom is given a copy of all 20 books. Students may also check the books out from the school library, the local library, as well as SORA, a free reading app supported by Jordan School District.
After students have finished reading a book, they will fill out a reading card and turn it into their teacher or the library. Students will then receive a sticker for their BOB Bingo Card and create a “Bingo” for a prize. Students who read all 20 books will get to pick up a free book to keep! At the end of the year students who have read at least 5 books will be invited to participate in a “Battle.” A “battle” is a fun competition between teams of students where they are asked questions about the books they have read.
This year we will once again have teams go head to head in a bracket style battle. You can help your students with Battle of the Books by encouraging their reading, helping them find the books they want to read at the local library or online, and simply ask questions about the BOB books! When the battle grows closer we will need parent volunteers to help with the battles. We hope students and their families will take part in this reading adventure with Bastian Elementary.
Happy Reading,
Bastian Elementary PTA
